INTERACTIVE DRAWING THERAPY
– A SAMPLER

Presenters:
Claudje Lecompte
Larry McCabe
Florence Ee

This workshop is a sampler of using Interactive Drawing Therapy (IDT) with clients in a counselling session. Participants will have the opportunity to experience firsthand the power of this client–centered, modern and innovative therapeutic approach.

IDT requires no artistic talent or drawing ability. The therapy has no interest in aesthetic or creativity considerations. IDT uses right-brain drawing, writing and experiential techniques to complement and extend the more common left-brain talking and cognitive processes. IDT accesses deeply resourceful and wise parts of the unconscious, and provides us with new tools for understanding and working with the client's natural therapeutic process.

IDT can be used in either individual or group settings. It is a practical, modern therapy suited to both short-term crisis work and long-term developmental work. It can be used in simple non-interpretive ways or more intensively at greater depth. It is an easily learnt user-friendly therapy that can stand alone or be used in conjunction with other modalities. It is particularly useful with clients who are not verbally or conceptually fluent.

IDT allows the words, images and behaviours of the client to reveal where they are in their therapeutic process, the nature of the underlying issues and how best to intervene.

Claudje has been a Guidance Counsellor with Education Queensland for 12 years, graduated as an Art Psychotherapist from UQ mid 2008 (MMH-Art Therapy) and has only recently discovered the versatility of IDT. She uses both IDT and Art Therapy in individual and group work with students, parents and staff in Primary schools.

Larry is a workplace counsellor.  He has used IDT for 2 years to effectively process grief & loss, trauma, personal relationships, supervision, and management coaching.  He finds a wide range of people relate well to IDT.

Florence has used IDT in her telephone and face to face counselling sessions in the last 2 years. She has worked with young and adult clients using IDT and found it a powerful tool and framework to work with. Florence is currently working at Centacare.

Larry, Florence and Claudje meet each month (last Wednesday of each month) with fellow IDTers for Peer Group Supervision, and it is from this exchange of experiences as well as their training in IDT that they will share their thoughts and experiences of using IDT in individual and group settings and with children, adolescents and adults.
